Squarespace

Step by step: add the Notix DKIM, SPF, MX and DMARC records under Custom Records in Squarespace Domains.

Use this guide if your domain is registered with Squarespace, or connected to it with Nameserver Connect. This includes domains that moved over from Google Domains. If your domain only points at Squarespace with DNS Connect, add the records at the company that runs its DNS instead.

Open your domain in Domains first and keep the page open. You copy every name and value from its DNS records table.

The records to add

TypeNameValuePriority
TXTnotix._domainkeyp=... (copy the whole key)none
TXTmailv=spf1 include:_spf.usenotix.dev ~allnone
MXmailfeedback-smtp.<region>.amazonses.com10
TXT_dmarcv=DMARC1; p=none;none

These names are for a domain added as acme.com. Notix shows each name in the short form, without your main domain on the end, so copy it from your domain page as it is. If you added a subdomain such as news.acme.com, the names read mail.news and notix._domainkey.news; _dmarc stays the same. The DKIM name and key are different for every domain. The MX value names the region your domain sends from, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com, so copy it from your domain page too.

Add them at Squarespace

  1. Open the DNS settings

    Open your domains dashboard and click the domain name. Click DNS, then DNS Settings, and scroll down to Custom Records. Squarespace may ask for your password, or your two-factor code, before it lets you change records.

  2. Add each TXT record

    Click Add record.

    1. In the Type menu, select TXT.
    2. In Name, enter the name from the table, for example _dmarc.
    3. In Text, paste the value. Do not add quotation marks.
    4. Click Save.

    Repeat for the DKIM, SPF and DMARC records.

  3. Add the MX record

    Click Add record again.

    1. In the Type menu, choose MX.
    2. In Name, enter mail.
    3. In Priority, enter 10.
    4. In Mail Server, paste the MX value, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com.
    5. Click Save.

Things to know at Squarespace

  • Squarespace adds your domain to the Name field for you. Enter mail, not mail.acme.com, and _dmarc, not _dmarc.acme.com.
  • Squarespace warns that quotation marks in the Text field can stop an SPF record working. Paste values without quotes.
  • SPF and DKIM records can be up to 2048 bits, so the long DKIM key fits in one record. Do not split it.
  • Custom records have a 4-hour TTL unless you change it. You can leave it.

SPF and DMARC: check before you add

  • SPF. A name can have only one SPF record. Notix puts its SPF on mail, not on your main domain, so it never clashes with the SPF your main domain may already have for your mailbox provider. Leave that one as it is. If mail itself already has a TXT record that starts with v=spf1, do not add a second one: edit it to include include:_spf.usenotix.dev.
  • DMARC. A domain can have only one DMARC record. If _dmarc already has a record that starts with v=DMARC1, keep it and skip the Notix one. Notix accepts the record you have. Two DMARC records cancel each other out, and mailbox providers then ignore both.
  • MX on `mail`. The MX record only takes bounce and complaint reports back to Notix. It does not touch the MX records on your main domain, so your normal inbox keeps working.

After you save

Squarespace says a saved record can take up to 48 hours to work, and often much less. Most records show in Notix within about 10 minutes.

You do not need to watch the page. Notix checks your records again on its own, and the domain turns Verified when the required records are found. To check straight away, open the domain in Domains and press Verify again. If a record is found at the wrong name, for example mail.acme.com.acme.com, the domain page says what to fix.

The records you add stay at your DNS host. Do not delete them later: Notix keeps checking them while you send.
