Namecheap

Step by step: add the Notix DKIM, SPF, MX and DMARC records in Advanced DNS, or in cPanel on Namecheap hosting.

Use this guide if your domain is with Namecheap. There are two places the records can go:

  • Nameservers end in registrar-servers.com (BasicDNS, PremiumDNS or FreeDNS): use Advanced DNS, below.
  • Nameservers are dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com (Namecheap shared hosting): use cPanel's Zone Editor. Jump to Namecheap shared hosting (cPanel).

Open your domain in Domains first and keep the page open. You copy every name and value from its DNS records table.

The records to add

TypeHostValuePriority
TXTnotix._domainkeyp=... (copy the whole key)none
TXTmailv=spf1 include:_spf.usenotix.dev ~allnone
MXmailfeedback-smtp.<region>.amazonses.com10
TXT_dmarcv=DMARC1; p=none;none

These names are for a domain added as acme.com. Notix shows each name in the short form, without your main domain on the end, so copy it from your domain page as it is. If you added a subdomain such as news.acme.com, the names read mail.news and notix._domainkey.news; _dmarc stays the same. The DKIM name and key are different for every domain. The MX value names the region your domain sends from, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com, so copy it from your domain page too.

Add them at Namecheap

  1. Open Advanced DNS

    Log in to your Namecheap account, choose Domain List on the left and click Manage next to your domain. Open the Advanced DNS tab at the top.

  2. Add each TXT record

    Under HOST RECORDS, click Add new record and choose TXT Record as the type.

    1. In Host, enter the name from the table, for example _dmarc.
    2. In Value, paste the value.
    3. Leave TTL on Automatic.

    Add the DKIM, SPF and DMARC records this way, then click Save all changes.

  3. Add the MX record

    On BasicDNS, MX records for an outside service go under Mail Settings, further down the Advanced DNS tab, with Custom MX selected. Add an MX record there with Host mail, Value set to the MX value, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com, and Priority 10. Save the changes.

    Read the warning below before you switch Mail Settings to Custom MX.

Things to know at Namecheap

  • Namecheap does not let you type the domain in Host: for notix._domainkey.acme.com you enter only notix._domainkey. Namecheap calls this a system requirement.
  • Mail Settings applies to your whole domain. If your inbox runs on Namecheap Private Email or Email Forwarding today, switching to Custom MX can stop that mail. In that case, ask Namecheap support how to add an MX record on mail without changing your own mail first.
  • If Mail Settings already shows Custom MX, add the Notix record next to the ones there. Do not remove the records on @.
  • Namecheap warns that a CNAME record on your bare domain breaks email. Do not add one.

Namecheap shared hosting (cPanel)

If your domain's nameservers are dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com, your DNS is on your Namecheap hosting, and Namecheap says to add records in cPanel, not in Advanced DNS.

  1. Open the Zone Editor

    Log in to cPanel. In the Domains section, click Zone Editor, then Manage next to your domain.

  2. Add each TXT record

    Click + Add Record and pick TXT from the list next to the Type field.

    1. In Name, enter the record's full name with a dot at the end, for example _dmarc.acme.com. for a domain acme.com.
    2. Leave TTL as it is.
    3. In Record, paste the value.
    4. Save the record.

    Repeat for the DKIM and SPF records: notix._domainkey.acme.com. and mail.acme.com..

  3. Add the MX record

    Click + Add Record and pick MX.

    1. In Name, enter mail.acme.com..
    2. In Priority, enter 10.
    3. In Destination, paste the MX value, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com.
    4. Save the record.
  • Namecheap says the Name must be a domain, with an optional dot at the end, and its examples mix short and full names. A full name with a dot at the end is the safe choice. After saving, check that no name ends in your domain twice.
  • Do not change Email Routing, and do not remove the MX record for mail.yourdomain.tld that cPanel made. Namecheap's steps for those are for moving your inbox to another provider. The Notix MX record is a new one on mail, next to your own.
  • Namecheap says to allow up to 30 minutes for the records to spread.

SPF and DMARC: check before you add

  • SPF. A name can have only one SPF record. Notix puts its SPF on mail, not on your main domain, so it never clashes with the SPF your main domain may already have for your mailbox provider. Leave that one as it is. If mail itself already has a TXT record that starts with v=spf1, do not add a second one: edit it to include include:_spf.usenotix.dev.
  • DMARC. A domain can have only one DMARC record. If _dmarc already has a record that starts with v=DMARC1, keep it and skip the Notix one. Notix accepts the record you have. Two DMARC records cancel each other out, and mailbox providers then ignore both.
  • MX on `mail`. The MX record only takes bounce and complaint reports back to Notix. It does not touch the MX records on your main domain, so your normal inbox keeps working.

After you save

Namecheap says new records normally take effect in about 30 minutes. Most records show in Notix within about 10 minutes.

You do not need to watch the page. Notix checks your records again on its own, and the domain turns Verified when the required records are found. To check straight away, open the domain in Domains and press Verify again. If a record is found at the wrong name, for example mail.acme.com.acme.com, the domain page says what to fix.

The records you add stay at your DNS host. Do not delete them later: Notix keeps checking them while you send.
