Domains.co.za

Step by step: add the Notix DKIM, SPF, MX and DMARC records for a domain whose DNS is at Domains.co.za.

Use this guide if your domain is with Domains.co.za. If you have a hosting package there, the records go in cPanel's Zone Editor. If you have the domain only, they go in Manage DNS in the Domains.co.za client area.

Open your domain in Domains first and keep the page open. You copy every name and value from its DNS records table.

The records to add

TypeNameValuePriority
TXTnotix._domainkeyp=... (copy the whole key)none
TXTmailv=spf1 include:_spf.usenotix.dev ~allnone
MXmailfeedback-smtp.<region>.amazonses.com10
TXT_dmarcv=DMARC1; p=none;none

These names are for a domain added as acme.com. Notix shows each name in the short form, without your main domain on the end, so copy it from your domain page as it is. If you added a subdomain such as news.acme.com, the names read mail.news and notix._domainkey.news; _dmarc stays the same. The DKIM name and key are different for every domain. The MX value names the region your domain sends from, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com, so copy it from your domain page too.

Add them at Domains.co.za

  1. Open the Zone Editor

    In the Domains.co.za client area, click Manage Services and select your hosting package. Click Manage next to the domain, scroll to Control Panel under Product Information, and click Login to open cPanel. In cPanel, scroll down to Domains and click Zone Editor, then click Manage next to your domain.

    Domain only, with no hosting? Click Manage Services, then Domains, select Manage next to the domain, choose Manage DNS next to DNS Records, and click Add DNS Records. Domains.co.za does not describe that form's fields, so fill it in the same way as below.

  2. Add each TXT record

    In the Zone Editor, click + Add Record and select Add TXT Record.

    1. In Name, enter the name from the table, for example _dmarc.
    2. In Record, paste the value.
    3. Click Save Record.

    Repeat for the DKIM, SPF and DMARC records.

  3. Add the MX record

    Click + Add Record and choose MX from the list.

    1. Enter mail as the name.
    2. In Priority, enter 10.
    3. In Destination, paste the MX value, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com.
    4. Click Save Record.

Things to know at Domains.co.za

  • In cPanel, Domains.co.za says to enter @ for the main domain and a short name such as mail for mail.domain.com. Enter the short names from the table.
  • For its own DNS zones outside cPanel, Domains.co.za says its system uses the full domain name rather than @. If the Manage DNS form shows the full name, enter mail.acme.com, notix._domainkey.acme.com and _dmarc.acme.com for a domain acme.com. Check the saved name does not end in your domain twice.
  • Domains.co.za does not say whether it wants a dot at the end of the MX value. If the saved record shows your domain added after the value, edit it and add a dot at the end.

SPF and DMARC: check before you add

  • SPF. A name can have only one SPF record. Notix puts its SPF on mail, not on your main domain, so it never clashes with the SPF your main domain may already have for your mailbox provider. Leave that one as it is. If mail itself already has a TXT record that starts with v=spf1, do not add a second one: edit it to include include:_spf.usenotix.dev.
  • DMARC. A domain can have only one DMARC record. If _dmarc already has a record that starts with v=DMARC1, keep it and skip the Notix one. Notix accepts the record you have. Two DMARC records cancel each other out, and mailbox providers then ignore both.
  • MX on `mail`. The MX record only takes bounce and complaint reports back to Notix. It does not touch the MX records on your main domain, so your normal inbox keeps working.

After you save

Domains.co.za says MX, TXT and SPF changes take from 1 to 24 hours, and other pages give up to 48 hours. Most records show in Notix within about 10 minutes.

You do not need to watch the page. Notix checks your records again on its own, and the domain turns Verified when the required records are found. To check straight away, open the domain in Domains and press Verify again. If a record is found at the wrong name, for example mail.acme.com.acme.com, the domain page says what to fix.

The records you add stay at your DNS host. Do not delete them later: Notix keeps checking them while you send.
