DigitalOcean

Step by step: add the Notix DKIM, SPF, MX and DMARC records under Networking in DigitalOcean.

Use this guide if your domain's nameservers are ns1.digitalocean.com, ns2.digitalocean.com and ns3.digitalocean.com. You add three TXT records and one MX record under Networking in the DigitalOcean control panel.

Open your domain in Domains first and keep the page open. You copy every name and value from its DNS records table.

The records to add

TypeHostnameValuePriority
TXTnotix._domainkeyp=... (copy the whole key)none
TXTmailv=spf1 include:_spf.usenotix.dev ~allnone
MXmailfeedback-smtp.<region>.amazonses.com10
TXT_dmarcv=DMARC1; p=none;none

These names are for a domain added as acme.com. Notix shows each name in the short form, without your main domain on the end, so copy it from your domain page as it is. If you added a subdomain such as news.acme.com, the names read mail.news and notix._domainkey.news; _dmarc stays the same. The DKIM name and key are different for every domain. The MX value names the region your domain sends from, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com, so copy it from your domain page too.

Add them at DigitalOcean

  1. Open the domain

    Click Networking in the main menu, click Domains, then click your domain.

  2. Add each TXT record

    Click Create a record and select TXT.

    1. In Hostname, enter the name from the table, for example _dmarc.
    2. In TXT Value, paste the value.
    3. Click Create Record.

    Repeat for the DKIM, SPF and DMARC records. DigitalOcean has no separate SPF or DKIM type: both are TXT records.

  3. Add the MX record

    Click Create a record and select MX.

    1. In Hostname, enter mail. Do not use @ here: @ is your main domain.
    2. In Mail providers mail server, paste the MX value, for example feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com.
    3. In Priority, enter 10.
    4. Click Create Record.

Things to know at DigitalOcean

  • DigitalOcean adds your domain to Hostname for you: to make www.example.com you enter www. So enter mail, not mail.acme.com.
  • DigitalOcean's docs say a full domain name in a target field needs a dot at the end so it is not read as a name under your own domain. They say this for SRV records. If the MX record shows up as feedback-smtp....amazonses.com.acme.com after you save, edit it and add a dot at the end of the value.

SPF and DMARC: check before you add

  • SPF. A name can have only one SPF record. Notix puts its SPF on mail, not on your main domain, so it never clashes with the SPF your main domain may already have for your mailbox provider. Leave that one as it is. If mail itself already has a TXT record that starts with v=spf1, do not add a second one: edit it to include include:_spf.usenotix.dev.
  • DMARC. A domain can have only one DMARC record. If _dmarc already has a record that starts with v=DMARC1, keep it and skip the Notix one. Notix accepts the record you have. Two DMARC records cancel each other out, and mailbox providers then ignore both.
  • MX on `mail`. The MX record only takes bounce and complaint reports back to Notix. It does not touch the MX records on your main domain, so your normal inbox keeps working.

After you save

DigitalOcean does not give a time. A lower TTL, such as 300 or 600 seconds, makes later changes show sooner. Most records show in Notix within about 10 minutes.

You do not need to watch the page. Notix checks your records again on its own, and the domain turns Verified when the required records are found. To check straight away, open the domain in Domains and press Verify again. If a record is found at the wrong name, for example mail.acme.com.acme.com, the domain page says what to fix.

The records you add stay at your DNS host. Do not delete them later: Notix keeps checking them while you send.
