What a unit is

A unit is how a paid plan counts what you send.

  • A marketing email is 1 unit.
  • A transactional email is 0.5 of a unit. Two transactional emails make one unit.

Which is which:

  • Broadcasts and automations are marketing.
  • Emails you send through the API or SMTP are transactional.
  • An API email you send with type: "MARKETING" counts as marketing.
  • The free welcome send does not count at all.

Contacts, contact books and suppression entries are never counted.

How many emails is that?

Pro's 50,000 units buys any of these:

  • 50,000 marketing emails, or
  • 100,000 transactional emails, or
  • a mix, such as 20,000 marketing (20,000 units) and 60,000 transactional (30,000 units).

Scale's 100,000 units is 100,000 marketing or 200,000 transactional emails. Business's 300,000 units is 300,000 marketing or 600,000 transactional emails.

When you reach your limit

When your team has used all its units, sending stops. It starts again when your units reset at the start of your next billing month.

  • Emails already queued wait. Nothing is lost.
  • Broadcasts and automations pause.
  • The API refuses new sends and says the monthly limit is reached. SMTP answers with a temporary error, so your server tries again later.
  • Sign-in and verification codes keep going out, up to a daily ceiling: 500 a day on Pro, 1,000 on Scale and 3,000 on Business (1% of your plan's units, at least 500). Past that, they stop until the next day. They still count as units.

You get an email and a dashboard banner at 80% and again at 100%.

To keep sending, do one of these:

Free plan limits

Free counts emails, not units: 5,000 a month and 200 a day. When Free reaches either limit, sending stops until the next day or month. Free has no pay-as-you-go. Upgrade to a paid plan to send more.

Change plans

A team admin can change plan in Billing & wallet.

  • Moving up takes effect at once. You pay a prorated charge for the rest of the billing month, and the bigger plan's units apply straight away.
  • Moving down, or back to Free, takes effect at your next renewal. Until then you keep your current plan.

Nothing is deleted when you change plans.

From code, Get usage returns your units used and included, and Get the plan returns your plan.
